On 28 August 2025, the Ethiopian Roads Administration (ERA), through its Road Research Center, hosted the 8th Annual Road Research Conference in Addis Ababa. This year’s theme, “Resilient and Sustainable Road Infrastructure through Research: Advancing Safety, Technology and Climate Adaptation,” reflected Ethiopia’s growing commitment to building a road network that can withstand both rapid development and climate challenges.

The conference brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure Development, representatives from the ERA, academic researchers, private sector innovators, and international development partners. This diverse gathering underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in shaping the future of Ethiopia’s transport sector.

Gracing the occasion as Guest of Honour, H.E. Yetemgeta Asrat, the State Minister of Urban and Infrastructure Development, commended the Ethiopian Roads Administration and its partners for their continued efforts in promoting research-led solutions. He emphasized that innovation and knowledge sharing are central to achieving Ethiopia’s long-term vision for resilient, sustainable, and inclusive infrastructure growth.

Presentations Driving Innovation

A total of 15 research papers were presented, covering four key areas central to Ethiopia’s infrastructure goals:

  • Climate Adaptation: Strategies for resilient road infrastructure and effective drainage systems.
  • Road Safety: New approaches to safer road design and the application of emerging technologies.
  • Maintenance Challenges: Sustainable solutions for Ethiopia’s expanding road network.
  • Innovative Construction: Use of advanced materials and methods to enhance durability and cost efficiency.

These sessions not only provided technical insights but also offered actionable recommendations that can directly influence policy, planning, and implementation in the road sector.

Exhibition of Practical Solutions

Complementing the research discussions, the exhibition floor showcased practical technologies and solutions relevant to Ethiopia’s unique terrain and infrastructure needs. Demonstrations included Mechanically Stabilised Earth systems for slope stabilisation and subgrade improvement methods designed to strengthen road foundations—both seen as crucial for extending the lifespan and reliability of the country’s roadways.

A Platform for Shared Knowledge

The conference reaffirmed the ERA’s role in driving evidence-based policymaking and fostering dialogue between government, academia, and the private sector. By creating a platform for knowledge exchange, the event emphasised that sustainable and resilient infrastructure development requires both innovation and collaboration.

Speaking at the event, H.E. Yetemgeta Asrat highlighted Ethiopia’s vision to ensure that road development keeps pace with economic growth while aligning with national goals for safety, sustainability, and climate resilience.

Looking Ahead

As Ethiopia continues to expand and modernise its road network, the outcomes of the 8th Annual Road Research Conference will play a key role in shaping strategies that are not only technically sound but also socially and environmentally sustainable.

The event showcased how research-driven insights, when coupled with practical solutions, can help Ethiopia move closer to a transport system that is resilient, efficient, and future-ready.
